Word from the editor

Dear CyberAgent user,

I trust that you all had a good month and that the new Credit Act is not influencing your businesses in too many ways. The only "new" item that was brought under my attention is the Final Grant of Quotation that must be issued by the financial institutions. Should you have any information or even a bit of gossip pls. forward it to

One of the Estate Agencies using our CyberAgent software, Cape Route Properties, made the following stats available on where properties sales comes from in his business;

  • 22% Show houses
  • 20% Referrals
  • 10% Newspaper adverts
  • 23% Internet
  • 11% Office walk ins
  • 11% For sale boars
  • 3% Others

The Internet is his best source of sales. This was also reported by another CyberAgent user, one of the top agencies in the Tinus Strydom Property Group.

Now if the Internet plays such an important role in your business why do we keep on getting complaints from Internet browsers? Let me share a few with you;

I have been looking online to buy property since I am currently living overseas. I am disappointed in how out of date many of the property website are; and at how few agents actually respond to online requests for more info. I think they severely underestimate the power of the Internet as a marketing tool

and a very "polite" one;

May I have the courtesy of a response to my e-mail dated 6/7th June 2007 as a matter of urgency

Online Marketing for the Real Estate Agent

By Roelof Vermeulen for

If you are making a living as an estate agent you can be proud to be one of a few of the elite in a very challenging industry. It is no secret that only the best succeed in this very challenging industry.

Therefore when I first set out thinking on how to write this I had to understand that I was dealing with marketing professionals. The online industry are however very different and many top marketers are struggling to find their footing in this industry. However it is in most cases totally unnecessary as it is an industry that makes sense and is much easier to track statistically than the conventional marketing techniques...

How save is your data?

Hi John

I recently heard a disturbing story about an agent in Jo'burg that was using cyberagent. It has been told that his data base was hacked into and all his contacts taken. Are these allegations true?

Could you please shed some light on this story.

Dear PP,

Just the fact that we at CyberAgent have never heard from this agent you refer to is proof enough that this is an empty allegation. Our clients are all concerned about the confidentiality of their data and none of our clients would therefore ever keep an incident of this nature to themselves.

We at CyberAgent have strict access control to our servers. All our servers are protected with secure passwords that are 128bit encrypted - meaning the only way in for an attacker is through a brute force attack which could take him decades to breach the security perimeter. Physical access to the servers is also controlled by identity verification and we are proud to say that our servers are hosted at Internet Solutions - definately a leader in the field of server hosting.

I trust I have set your mind at ease - should you have any other questions relating to this - please mail me on

Kind regards
Jan Vorster

Tips for success
  • Good staff - Staff need to be enthusiastic and excited about what they do. We will always hire people who don't ask about car and salary first.
  • Market - Identify the market you're in, if it's expensive properties then stick to that area. A good estate agent can't straddle two camps.
  • Image - Make your company stand out - we use green throughout the company - the office is covered in plants, the adverts are green and our lorries are green.
  • Office location - Get a central location and make it as big as you can afford. Although a central location is not so important now that we have websites.
  • Diversification - You cant' t just be an estate agent these days, we're the only one in the district that does removals, plus we also do commercial property and we give advice on finance.
  • Co-operate - You have to talk to other estate agents, you can't be a cuckoo in the nest. You will need your competitors at some point.

The Institute is therefore the official mouthpiece of the real estate fraternity and represents the industry in negotiations with government, local authorities and lending institutions.

While the Institute is not a statutory body and therefore does not have legislative powers, it encourages the highest level of professionalism in real estate and governs the conduct of its members.

Workshops on the NATIONAL CREDIT ACT.

ICG Learning Solutions is offering a one day course on all the aspects of the NCA. If you are aware of any of your colleagues who may benefit from attending one of our NCA workshops, please refer them to me. My contact details are:

Linda Lourens

Our next available Workshop date will be as from the 12th July 2007 as listed below.

Course Dates
12-Jul 12-Jul 19-Jul
17-Jul 19-Jul
19-Jul 26-Jul

Courses are fully-facilitated and interactive and can be run at corporate venues, or at outside venues in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Polokwane. All learners will receive a certificate and relevant reference material.

Intec College will also run special courses to train debt counsellors. This is a crucial to the successful implementation of the NCA, as there are currently not enough fully-qualified people to refer over-indebted individuals as set out in the Act.

Our infrastructure and national presence is a substantial advantage, thanks to our backing from Educor and Naspers. The benefits of 100 years of distance learning expertise ensures that we can facilitate national roll-outs of such training.

All registration forms along with proof of payment must please be faxed or emailed to me. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact details are listed below.
